We believe that the classroom is not limited to walls and desks. Education happens wherever an individual is engaged, inspired, and enjoying the experience of discovery. We believe children are most successful in learning when all three of these pillars are provided in an open-ended environment that encourages them to become active participants in the learning process.
Children are naturally curious individuals, and, as they move through their environments, will start to gain new pieces of knowledge throughout their journey. We believe that as teachers, parents, and caregivers, it is our job to PARTNER in their learning and provide them the space to take the initiative in their education.
Little Flock Preschool is a play-based farm school encompassing Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Project-based pedagogies. We place a heavy emphasis on cooperative learning strategies and creating an uplifting learning community in our school. Little Flock Preschool will embody the overall philosophical objectives of a curriculum that promotes diversity, environmental stewardship, nature play, and child-led learning and will allow children to explore nature, art, and the classroom, in deeper, more meaningful ways.
Our school places a heavy emphasis on nature. Thanks to the lovely farm our school calls home we are able to include the surrounding property in our daily lesson plans. Outdoor lessons will include everything from nature walks, garden play, to animal interactions.
It will be the aim to participate in outdoor play every day, with the exception of inclement weather. To help your child enjoy every day at our school we will have cubby space provided for children to leave weather-appropriate clothing. Light rain and snow are not considered inclement weather,, and as such
children will still be encouraged to spend time outdoors.
The classroom will display an open and non-cluttered environment. This will make it easier for children to direct their focus and play. We will also aim to fill our space with mostly
natural or handmade materials and teaching implements. Plastic and mass-produced toys will be discouraged in our classroom space (but not non-exsitent).
Our classroom space will be broken into designated areas to help children navigate their environment and enjoy their time in our community. These areas will include a reading nook, block area, table spaces, and dramatic play area. Some of these spaces may double as group gathering spaces at certain times of the day.
